Learning and Earning Opportunities
(LEO)

Announcing the Spring 2001 Learning and Earning Opportunities (LEO)

Periodically the Institute for Data Research sponsors a Learning and Earning Opportunities event. The next will be from 3:00 - 6:00 PM on Wednesday, February 21st, 2001 in the Team Building Center - 5th Floor, School of Business Building (opposite the elevators). The event is open to all including doctoral, graduate, certificate, and undergraduate students and recent graduates.

Students Objectives

Many students are interested in gaining real world experience to compliment their classroom learning. Others are interested in studying advanced research topics. For others, the ability to make a significant income is key to their ability to attend (and pay for classes). Some desire to "try out" various advanced career options (such as interns, data engineers or research consultants gaining valuable analysis experience on limited term research projects as part of their educational experience. Many students enter their programs possessing information technology skills - skills for which organizations have paid students up to $55/hour.

Matching

The purpose of LEO is to match students with prospective sources of research opportunities, independent studies, and often employment as well. These events are great places to learn about possible programs of study and potential opportunities available to information system program participants. Organizations will be offering potential independent studies and paid project assignments and permanent positions.

Participants

Several organizations will be presenting summer learning and earning opportunities. Participating organizations and sample projects include:

- Deutsche Bank
- VA & MD Department of Corrections
- Evoke Software, Inc.
- KPI (Knowledge Partners, Inc.)
- Edward Jones
- Defense Logistics Agency
