Data Blueprint = Research & ApplicationResearch is the art of seeing what everyone else has seen, As a DAMA International Advisor and an associate professor of information systems at a Carnegie Doctoral Research University, I am often asked about my approach to data management research. My objective have been to implement a research agenda that complements the DAMA International Mission: "To promote the understanding, development and practice of managing information and data as a key enterprise asset" I was once asked to prepare a brief white paper describing my approach to research (access thelastmile.pdf). My teaching load has been a maximum of four sections each academic year and my reward structure has been weighted as sixty percent for scholarship, thirty percent for teaching, and ten percent for service. My research at VCU has concentrated on the reverse engineering of data and the key role that data and engineering plays in organizational integration as a fundamental tenant of Information Engineering. I contributed a column to DMReview discussing this issue. I have secured funded research into real world data engineering problems from commercial and government organizations. Much of my research is conducted in conjunction with the Institute for Data Research. Interesting recent results include the recovery of PeopleSoft metadata. Student research consultants and interns have played a key role in these efforts. Ph.D. students are one of the obvious outputs. |
