These positions involve technical research analysis employed by the VCU School of Business on technology-based research projects for various organizations. The nature, complexity, and magnitude of the work requires that research analysts possess a high technical and teamwork-based maturity. Research analysts have a significant impact on the perceived quality of the organization because they are one the front lines - directly interfacing with the clients. Incumbents generally work as project teams researching solutions to various client business and/or technical needs. As a team, they provide business and systems analysis skills applied to understanding and resolving these problems. Analysts possess demonstrated ability to work independently and with others; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to perform routine quantitative and narrative reporting; interpret policies, draft procedures and make sound recommendations. As technical specialists they excel at communication - helping clients to properly articulate requirements and co-develop solution approaches using techniques such as joint client-consultant solution development (JAD) sessions. Research analyst duties include teaching and educating clients about various technology-based solutions to complex systems problems. These interactions can take place in a range of situations from formal classroom settings to one-on-one interaction. Research analysts interact with high-level client organization technical counterparts such as project managers, system architects, and project consultants. Research analysts may be called upon to share project planning, coordination, and implementation duties with the other project team members as well as supervise junior project team members. Research analysts must be technically facile - capable of switching often among operating systems, computing platforms, networks, and display technologies. They must also be able to switch from among research tasks and tools. Some examples might include: developing project plans; various modeling tasks; working interactively with end-users to validate generated work products; effectively utilize text retrieval software; develop end-user support delivery methods.
